Handheld Learning and QR Codes

Last week we had a visit from the same group of primary 6 children who we worked with before.

At first I was unsure how to approach using handheld devices and QR codes to excite and engage the children however our group decided to prepare a treasure hunt for the children using QR codes and Ipod touches and Ipads.

QR codes are graphics which have information encoded onto it so that when it is scanned by a device with a QR reader, it can give instructions, link to a website, show a picture, show advertisements - the list is endless. We decided to use the QR codes to give the children instructions and directions to follow, thus creating a treasure hunt around the university campus. We set challenges at each code which the children had to complete before they could scan the next code which would give them the direction.

Scanning my QR code will take you to a video on youtube showing how QR codes work.

The children seemed to really enjoy taking part in the treasure hunt activity. They had to work together as a group to solve the tasks before moving on and once completed they had to create a story using IBook Creator. The children were able to insert their pictures and videos from the tasks and compile them into a story book, adding their own descriptions.

By scanning this code it will take you to MissG16's blog, who describes the links to CfE that handheld learning can provide.
